Lenard Tool & Machine, Inc. (LTM) was contacted by a medical industry customer to provide a production molding solution for the silicone incontinence device highlighted here. LTM's pre-design work revealed that a unique reverse engineering approach would be necessary to create a high-performance mold system for the complex silicone device.

Design work started in earnest with analysis of customer-provided models, drawings, and molds. The silicone device would require steel insert pieces as well as supporting wirework, all coated in silicon casting. With consultation from the molder, LTM developed a horizontally oriented injection mold that utilized heated cavity plates and shuttling cores. Pre-hardened 420 stainless steel was selected for the cavity plates, with the cores constructed out of plated 1144 steel.

For fabrication of the production mold LTM utilized CNC-type milling and turning, electrical discharge machining (EDM) and gun drilling. These processes were followed by refinement through surface grinding and bead blasting, operating under tolerances of ±0.005." A comprehensive evaluation of geometrical accuracy and function concluded the fabrication phase.

Delivering in a speedy 6 months, LTM brought to the customer an efficient and cost-effective solution for production of the silicone incontinence device. The end-result was a high-performance injection molding system that had been born from the experience driven engineering foundation necessary for such a reverse engineering project.
